Planning a first visit

What care might be recommended?

An examination helps the dentist assess your child’s teeth and gums and discuss next steps. Cleaning, X-rays, fluoride, sealants or treatment are recommended according to individual needs; not every child needs the same services at every appointment. Ask the dentist to explain the reasons, alternatives and estimated costs before treatment.

Habits between appointments

Ask the dental team to demonstrate age-appropriate brushing and cleaning between teeth, and to recommend the appropriate amount of fluoride toothpaste. The timing of your child’s next checkup should reflect their individual needs. Tell the office promptly about pain, swelling or a dental injury rather than waiting for a routine visit.
